The Africa Center is thrilled to be participating in Summer Streets this year with Traditional West African Glass Painting workshops led by artist Ibou Ndoye. Participants will be encouraged to paint a picture in the traditional West African style of glass painting. A book of stencils will be provided for students to choose from if they prefer to trace a picture onto the glass. At the end of the workshop, students will have a finished piece of art to take home. All workshops include a brief lesson on the history and technique of traditional West African glass painting.
The workshop will be taking place on a rolling basis throughout the event, with places available on a first come, first served basis.
Born in West Africa’s most progressive capital city, Dakar, Senegal, glass-painting artist IBRAHIMA NDOYE has combined modernism and traditionalism to create a style unique to himself. Ibrahima, commonly known as “Ibou,” grew up as the oldest child of a family of four boys in the suburbs of Dakar. Ibou’s mother made her living as a dressmaker while his grandmother worked as a tie-dye artist. Regularly surrounded by colorful African textiles and fabrics, it is not surprising that Ibou says he “socialized with art and cohabited with colors” from a very young age. Now Ibou resides in Jersey City, New Jersey, and regularly exhibits his art both locally and internationally in addition to holding glass painting workshops at libraries and schools. Ibou intends to continue promoting and expanding his artistic vision through exhibition, education and cultural exchange.
About Summer Streets
Summer Streets is an annual celebration of New York City’s most valuable public space—our streets. On three consecutive Saturdays in August, nearly seven miles of NYC’s streets are opened for people to play, run, walk and bike. Summer Streets provides space for healthy recreation and encourages New Yorkers to use more sustainable forms of transportation. In 2018, nearly 300,000 people took advantage of the open streets.
Summer Streets is modeled on other events from around the world including Ciclovía in Bogotá, Colombia and the Paris Plage in France and has since inspired other such events around the world such as CicloRecreo Via and London’s Regent Street Summer Streets.
Held between 7:00 am to 1:00 pm, Summer Streets extends from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park, along Park Avenue and connecting streets, with easy access from all points in New York City, allowing participants to plan a trip as long or short as they wish. All activities at Summer Streets are free of charge, and designed for people of all ages and ability levels to share the streets respectfully. Summer Streets is a project of the New York City Department of Transportation.
