Join us on Wednesday May 1st at 7PM for a screening of documentaries celebrating Malick Sidibé’s career as a self-taught Malian photographer and archivist. The screening will be followed by a conversation with the audience to reflect on what was seen, the links between Malick Sidibé’s legacy, and the practices, traditions, and topics explored through the ANM photo series.

Malick Sidibé’s renowned photographs of swinging parties and fashionable personalities chronicle Mali’s cultural journey through independence, offering unparalleled view of a society in transition. His work has inspired countless artists, including Assane and Mo, the creative duo behind the exhibition A New Multiculturalism, currently on view at The Africa Center. This program features two documentary films celebrating Sidibé’s career and legacy: “Malick Sidibé: Portrait of the Artist as a Portraitist” (Dir. Susan Vogel, 2006, 8 mins) and “Dolce Vita Africana” (Dir. Cosima Spender, 2008, 63 mins). The screening will be followed by an open conversation between Farima Kone Kito and the audience, creating space for reflection on Sidibé’s ongoing influence on explorations of multiculturalism, diasporic movements, and the evolution of culture.
