Film at The Africa Center presents "As I Open My Eyes"

Runtime – 102 minutes

Join us at The Africa Center on Thursday, December 12th at 7:00PM ET for Film at The Africa Center’s screening of As I Open My Eyes.

As I Open My Eyes begins on the eve of the Jasmine Revolution in Tunisia. Young Farah must decide whether to accept her offer to medical school or follow her passion for music. Her underground rock band, known for their daring and subversive lyrics, has become the target of local police harassment. After Farah is detained and interrogated, she realizes that one of her friends must be a snitch. Inspired by director Leyla Bouzid’s personal experience, the film features original compositions by Iraqi musician Khyam Allami.

In partnership with the African Film Festival, Film at The Africa Center showcases a selection of films by emerging African filmmakers. These films reflect a range of genres, themes, and visual styles, allowing audiences to experience the vibrant tapestry of African cinema.

About the Director:

Leyla Bouzid was born in 1984 and grew up in Tunisia. In 2003, she went to Paris to study French literature at the Sorbonne before graduating from la Fémis in Directing. In 2015, she directed Soubresauts (Mkhobbi Fi Kobba), her thesis film, in Tunisia a few months before the revolution. As I Open My Eyes, her award-winning first feature film, screened at many festivals and became a commercial success. Her second feature film, A Tale of Love and Desire, was released in 2021.
