On Saturday, October 25th, 2025, The Africa Center is proud to partner with SohoRep to co-present Songs of the Living in collaboration with Toshi Reagon and The Soapbox Presents. We invite our audiences to join us at 2PM at Duke Ellington Circle to learn sacred songs and gather in the spirit of resistance and resilience.

“It doesn't matter if you can sing, it doesn't matter if you're melodic, you are a vibrational being. We are a vibrational species. What we call ‘music’ now is our communicative contribution as a species on and to planet Earth -- and it's one of our best contributions of all.”  –  Toshi Reagon

Songs of the Living is part of the Parable Path, which features talks and rituals centered in collaborative living that draw inspiration from the classic sci-fi novel by the late Octavia E. Butler, Parable of the Sower. Over four weeks, Soho Rep will partner with an incredible coalition of artistic and civic centers across all five boroughs of New York City including Snug Harbor Cultural Center, Bronxlandia, The Africa Center, National Sawdust, Flushing Town Hall, Another World, Weeksville Heritage Center, Queens Public Library, Lincoln Center, El Puente, and BAM to produce eleven evenings of music and fellowship.

This program is an outdoor event and will be free, and first-come, first-served.
