In celebration of the opening of African/ American: Making the Nation’s Table, MOFAD, in partnership with The Africa Center, is thrilled to host a conversation between lead curator of the exhibition, Dr. Jessica B. Harris and host of the Netflix series, High on the Hog, Stephen Satterfield. Dr. Harris and Satterfield will discuss how her decades of scholarship have been interpreted both at the exhibition and for Netflix’s High on the Hog.
In-person tickets will include access to the exhibition (doors open at 6pm), a Shoebox Lunch Tasting curated by Carla Hall, and two glasses of wine.

Educator and culinary historian Jessica Harris is the author of fifteen books documenting the foods and foodways of the African Diaspora including High on the Hog: A Culinary Journey from Africa to America. She has written extensively about the culture of Africa in the Americas, lectured widely, and made numerous television appearances. Jessica holds a Ph.D. from NYU and is an English professor at Queens College, CUNY. She consults at Dillard University in New Orleans, where she founded the Institute for the Study of Culinary Cultures. Harris is a founding member of the Southern Foodways Alliance, and a member of the IACP and Les Dames d’Escoffier. Her articles have appeared in Eating Well, Food & Wine, Essence, and The New Yorker, among other publications, and she has been profiled in The New York Times. Harris has spoken about the food of African Americans on The Today Show, and Good Morning America, and at the Museum of Natural History, and has been a frequent guest at Philadelphia’s The Book and the Cook. In 2004, Harris was awarded the Jack Daniel’s Lifetime Achievement Award and most recently she was awarded the James Beard Foundation 2020 Lifetime Achievement Winner and Humanitarian of the Year. Since 2007, Stephen Satterfield has spent his career redefining food and beverage as means of organizing, activating and educating. He is the founder of Whetstone, a groundbreaking magazine and media company dedicated to food origins and culture from around the world.Prior to his career in media, Satterfield was a sommelier and social entrepreneur promoting wine as a catalyst for socioeconomic development for Black wine workers in South Africa. Satterfield is among the most prominent and respected voices in U.S. food media, and host of the critically acclaimed Netflix docuseries, High on the Hog.
