Upcoming at The Africa Center
We believe that every day is a day to celebrate Africa, recognize its many rich cultures, and to reinforce the power and potential in uniting the Diaspora in service of the continent’s present and future.
Dear Friend,
On May 27, The Africa Center bustled with the vibrant energy of our Africa Day Weekend Celebration, and we are thrilled to share highlights of this momentous event with you.
The day began with a libation ceremony to celebrate our three-story installation and tribute to Africa’s 55 countries and to Pan-African unity. Throughout the day, attendees enjoyed music by DJ Birane, art from artists and artisans from our community, and delicious cuisine served by our dedicated vendors. You can check out a recap reel from the day’s event here. We hope you’ll stop by to take a selfie with your favorite flag and tag us @TheAfricaCenter on all social media platforms.
Thank you to our speakers H.E. Fatima K. Mohammed, Permanent Observer of the AU to the UN, Manhattan Deputy Borough President Keisha Sutton-James, Christelle N. Onwu, NYC Commission on Human Rights and Salim Drammeh, President of the Gambian Youth Organization, who helped us mark this special day and to our performers, Kaisokah Moko Jumbies, who invited guests to indulge in the rich tapestry of African culture through stilt walking. We would also like to extend our deepest gratitude to our outstanding vendors, who ensured the diverse textures and tastes of Africa were well represented. We appreciate the time, effort, and love for the continent that you poured into making this day a memorable one.
This month, we’re excited to celebrate the 45th annual Museum Mile Festival on June 13th with live performances, art-making workshops and more. On Monday June 19th, in honor of Juneteenth we will be hosting the Black Thought Project and Media 2070 for a zine-making workshop. Join us on June 24th for a special collaboration with Harlem Needle Arts and the American Folk Art Museum for a summer series of quilting workshops. More information on how to register is below.
