Reflecting on the Results

November 7, 2024

Dear Friends,

As we come to the end of what has been an intensely fraught and contentious election season, we now know that the Electoral College has selected Donald J. Trump as the next President of the United States. Regardless of the outcome, it is important for us to acknowledge and accept this decision with the understanding that elections, while critical, are but one component of a functioning democracy.

The sanctity of civil society does not begin, nor does it end, on Election Day or at the ballot box. Government, while important, is only one piece of the larger puzzle and must be viewed as a resource, not a solution in and of itself. The responsibility for shaping the future of our society lies with each of us, paying attention to what is happening in our communities, in our country, and in the world. Our collective future is not dependent on one person or one system, but on each of us doing our part to build a just, vibrant, and resilient society.

As we look ahead, the world is shifting under our feet. The rise of BRICS and the global south signals a reordering of global power, making it more important than ever that the leadership from the highest office in the land understands and navigates this new terrain effectively. The role of the U.S. President will be critical in shaping relationships and policies that recognize and respect this new global order, particularly as it relates to Africa’s role in the world, ensuring that the United States is not just a participant but a thoughtful and engaged leader in this rapidly changing landscape. You can read more about this in our latest Policy Perspectives: Regardless of the US election outcome, its Africa policy will need to be different by Tunde Olatunji, Associate Director of Policy at The Africa Center.

As we close out the year and look ahead, I hope you’ll take time to visit us at The Africa Center where we continue to have discussions related to the present and future of African and Afro-descended people across the world. We will continue to process the results of this election season, we remain mindful of the political changes unfolding across the African continent and beyond, recognizing that the dynamics of global leadership are evolving rapidly and will impact us all.

As always, we appreciate your continued support of The Africa Center. We look forward to seeing you soon.

With gratitude,

Uzodinma Iweala
