Dear Friends,

It is with the deepest sorrow that we mourn the loss of our beloved Trustee, Dr. Herbert Onyewumbu Wigwe who died on February 9 in a helicopter accident along with his wife and eldest son.

Dr. Wigwe joined The Africa Center’s Board of Trustees in 2020, bringing a passion for African contemporary arts and culture to our growing institution.

In addition to his demanding role as Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings, he was also a strong advocate for higher education and improving health equity in Nigeria, leading programs to fight against diseases like malaria and prostate cancer and most recently, founding a uniquely African and innovative institution, Wigwe University.

We will remember Dr. Wigwe for his fearless resolve, his dedication to African ingenuity and prosperity, and for the excitement he brought to The Africa Center and beyond.

Our thoughts are with his entire family during this unbelievably painful time and with the families of all who lost their lives in this tragic accident.

In shared grief,
