(New York, NY - March 19, 2026) - The Africa Center announces the extension of Resistance in Memory: Visions of Sudan, an acclaimed group exhibition examining the 'Forgotten Crisis' in Sudan through the photographs of 12 emerging Sudanese artists. Currently on view, the exhibition will now run through Sunday, June 28.

Resistance in Memory: Visions of Sudan examines the memory of an ever-changing Sudan and the strength and resilience of its people who refuse to be forgotten or defined by those beyond its borders. Structured chronologically through 42 photographs and across nine thematic axes, the exhibition charts the arc from the 2019 revolution - when men and women took to the streets seeking revolution, only to have it thwarted by warlords in a continuous coup d’état - through the ongoing war, exile, displacement, and enduring hope, offering intimate and urgent visual narratives from the Sudanese struggle.

The exhibition is one of several programs and initiatives at The Africa Center over the past year to draw greater attention and action to the ongoing conflict in Sudan, including film screenings; workshops; Sarah Elawad’s When the War is Over, a site-specific installation offering a powerful and poetic visual statement on culture, memory, and resilience - currently on view in The Africa Center's Fifth Avenue windows; and Peace and Memory Lab, a new initiative to establish culture and heritage protection in Sudan as a strategic peacebuilding tool.

The Africa Center’s presentation of Resistance in Memory: Visions of Sudan is curated and edited by Edith Arance, Director, Galería Sura, in collaboration with Evelyn Owen, Associate Director, Curatorial Projects, The Africa Center, with new texts by Dalia Elhassan.

Resistance in Memory: Visions of Sudan is on view through Sunday, June 28 at The Africa Center, located at 1280 Fifth Avenue in East Harlem.

Beginning March 25th, exhibition hours will be Wednesday – Friday (7:00 am to 3:00 pm) and Saturday – Sunday (8:00 am to 4:00 pm). Admission is free.
